Website vs Instagram: What Does Your Business Actually Need?
They do different jobs. Here is which one to start with, based on how your customers actually find you.
This question comes up in almost every first conversation, usually phrased as "we already have Instagram — do we need a website too?"
The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and which you need first depends on one thing: how people discover you.
The core difference
Instagram is a discovery channel. People who were not looking for you scroll past and become aware you exist.
A website is a decision tool. People who already know you exist come to find out whether to buy.
Discovery without a decision tool means people find you and drift away. A decision tool with no discovery means a beautiful site nobody visits. Most businesses need both eventually. The question is sequencing.
Start with Instagram if…
Your product is visual and impulse-driven. Cakes, clothes, interiors, nail art, home decor. People buy these because they saw something and wanted it.
Your customers are under 35 and local. They will look you up on Instagram before they look you up on Google.
You can post consistently. This is the part people underestimate. Instagram rewards frequency. If you cannot manage three posts a week, the channel will not work regardless of quality.
You are still testing what you sell. Social is faster and cheaper to change than a website.
Start with a website if…
People search for what you sell. "Dentist near me", "CA for GST filing", "AC repair Whitefield". If your service is something people go looking for at the moment they need it, search is where the customers are — and Instagram posts do not appear in search results.
Your sale needs explaining. Services with packages, options, eligibility or a process need pages, not captions.
Your customers are businesses. B2B buyers check for a website. A company with only an Instagram page reads as a side project.
Your price is high or the trust bar is high. Clinics, legal, financial, construction, education. People need to see credentials, process and proof before they call.
Your customers are not on Instagram. Plenty of profitable businesses serve people who are not.
The trap in the middle
The most common mistake is running Instagram well for two years, building a real audience — and having nowhere to send them. Every enquiry arrives as a DM, gets answered manually, and disappears into a chat history. Nothing is measurable and nothing compounds.
The second most common is the opposite: a website that goes live and is never mentioned again. No posts, no Google Business Profile, no reason for anyone to visit.
A practical sequence for most businesses
- Google Business Profile. Free, fastest return, works immediately for local searches.
- A small website. Five pages that answer the real questions, with one obvious way to get in touch.
- Instagram, consistently. Now with somewhere to send people.
- Paid ads, once you know which of the above converts.
Doing them in this order means every step makes the previous one work harder. Doing them backwards means paying for traffic that lands nowhere.
What "a website" means at this scale
It does not mean twenty pages and a six-week project. For most businesses starting out it means:
- A home page that says what you do and where
- A services page with real prices or price ranges
- Something that proves you are real — photos, process, team
- A contact page with a phone number, a WhatsApp button and a short form
That is it. It can be live in two to three weeks and it will do more work than the next fifty Instagram posts.
The one-line version
If people already know you and need convincing, build a website. If nobody knows you exist yet, build an audience.
Most businesses need both within the first year. Just do not build the second one before the first one is working.
